These changes aim to enhance road safety, adjust insurance requirements, and address vehicular crimes. Understanding these updates is crucial for all motorists to ensure compliance and promote safer driving practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading to find out more about these changes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Liability Insurance Requirements&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB1107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Bill 1107<\/a>, also known as the Protect California Drivers Act, increases the minimum auto insurance coverage requirements, which have not been changed in more than 50 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minimum liability insurance limits will increase from the current 15\/30\/5 to 30\/60\/15. This means drivers must carry at least the following as of January 1st:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-arrow-list\">\n<li><strong>$30,000<\/strong>&nbsp;for bodily injury or death per person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$60,000<\/strong>&nbsp;for bodily injury or death per accident<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$15,000<\/strong>&nbsp;for property damage per accident<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All existing policies with lower limits will automatically renew at the new minimum limits. Your premium may be affected if your coverage limits are increased to meet these new minimum requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Also known as the \u201cdaylighting\u201d law,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assembly Bill 413<\/a>&nbsp;makes it illegal to park within 20 feet of a marked or unmarked crosswalk, regardless of whether the curb is painted red.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the law has technically been in effect since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dklaw.com\/the-fine-print\/new-california-traffic-laws-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">January 2024<\/a>, California authorities will begin issuing citations this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfmta.com\/getting-around\/walk\/daylighting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA)<\/a>, daylighting increases pedestrian visibility at busy intersections by removing parked cars next to crosswalks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sideshows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Stricter laws will apply to those participating in or watching&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dklaw.com\/the-fine-print\/what-to-know-about-california-street-racing-laws\/\">illegal sideshows or street takeovers<\/a>. The governor signed several new laws aimed at addressing street racing, sideshows, and takeovers into law.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assembly Bill 1978<\/a>&nbsp;allows law enforcement to impound a vehicle, even for spectators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB2186#:~:text=LEGISLATIVE%20COUNSEL'S%20DIGEST&amp;text=Existing%20law%20allows%20a%20vehicle,offstreet%20parking%20facility%2C%20as%20specified.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assembly Bill 2186<\/a>&nbsp;allows the authorities to impound vehicles involved in sideshows in parking lots or on private streets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez, the bill\u2019s author, told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/gov-gavin-newsom-new-laws-impound-vehicles-sideshows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS News<\/a>&nbsp;that the law \u201cwill ensure that speed exhibitions will not continue in a different location once a street race has been dispersed and will keep roads, pedestrians, and other drivers safe.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third law,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB2807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assembly Bill 2807<\/a>, defines \u201csideshow\u201d and \u201cstreet takeover\u201d violations more clearly. The final law,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB3085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assembly 3085<\/a>, expands an existing law allowing officers to impound vehicles used in speed races.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Autonomous Vehicles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies such as Waymo and Cruise will face a new reality in 2025: tickets for their autonomous vehicles. Governor Gavin Newsom signed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assembly Bill 1777<\/a>, allowing law enforcement to cite vehicles via a \u201cnotice of autonomous vehicle (AV) non-compliance.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The notice will be sent to the autonomous vehicle company, which must report it to the DMV within 72 hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill directly addresses traffic incidents involving self-driving cars, such as disruptions to traffic flow, collisions with pedestrians, and impediments to emergency vehicles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">License Plates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB2111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assembly Bill 2111<\/a>&nbsp;in California addresses the issue of license plate alterations designed to evade identification by visual or electronic means. The bill specifically prohibits actions such as erasing or painting over a license plate\u2019s reflective coating or otherwise altering it to prevent its capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AB 2111 aims to curb practices that obstruct the readability of license plates, which can impede law enforcement and automated systems used for toll collection and traffic monitoring.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speed Safety in Malibu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speed cameras are coming to Malibu.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB1297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SB 1297<\/a>&nbsp;authorizes a five-year speed safety pilot program, building upon a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dklaw.com\/the-fine-print\/california-speed-cameras-the-solution-to-reducing-pedestrian-accidents\/\">program<\/a>&nbsp;released last year to curb speeding-related accidents and fatalities. Currently, speed cameras are in six California cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Long Beach, San Jose, and Glendale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law addresses the dangerous driving conditions on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).
