That kind of trust says everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-button-phone\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-primary-yellow-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"tel:8002010265\">800-201-0265<\/a><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__blocks align wp-block-dklaw-toc-blocks\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Motorcycle License&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/road-safety\/motorcycles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;35%<\/a>&nbsp;of motorcyclist fatalities occurred while riders were operating without a valid motorcycle license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In California, you must have a motorcycle license to ride. Having a standard driver\u2019s license does not count as a motorcycle license. You must pass a motorcycle knowledge test and a motorcycle skills test. Completing a motorcycle training course may allow you to skip the skills test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All riders under 21 must enroll in the CHP<a href=\"https:\/\/motorcyclesafetyca.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;California Motorcyclist Safety Program<\/a>&nbsp;(CMSP) and have a learner\u2019s permit for at least six months before applying for an M1 or M2 license. While not mandatory, riders over 21 are encouraged to take a motorcycle safety course before applying for a license.&nbsp;California offers two distinct motorcycle licenses: Class M1 and Class M2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Class M1 license allows a rider to operate any two-wheel motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized scooter, as well as all vehicles categorized under Class M2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Class M2 license allows riders to operate any motorized bicycle, moped, or scooter.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helmets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>California has a<a href=\"https:\/\/dklaw.com\/the-fine-print\/california-motorcycle-helmet-laws-a-complete-guide\/\">&nbsp;universal helmet law<\/a>&nbsp;mandating that all motorcycle riders and motorcycle passengers wear a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) compliant helmet when riding. The law also applies to motor-driven cycles and motorized bicycles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A motorcycle safety helmet must have the DOT symbol on the back to be compliant. The symbol signifies that the helmet meets the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 218.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When choosing a motorcycle helmet, look for a snug fit all the way around. It should have no obvious defects and must be securely fastened while you are riding. A full-face helmet offers the most protection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lane Splitting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, California is the only state to&nbsp;legally allow lane splitting, which occurs when motorcyclists ride between two lanes of traffic. While there is no speed limit for lane splitting, the California Highway Patrol states that motorcyclists should not travel at 10 mph or faster than moving traffic. If you see a motorcyclist zipping past you on the freeway at a high speed, that is most likely illegal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lane splitting has been endorsed by most motorcycle organizations, but some argue that it puts motorcyclists in danger because other drivers may not see them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Motorcycle Insurance Requirements&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having car insurance does not automatically guarantee you coverage on a bike. Every motorcycle driver must carry separate motorcycle insurance to ride in California. While car insurance covers passengers, motorcycle insurance typically only covers a single rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/insurance-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;minimum-coverage standards<\/a>&nbsp;include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-arrow-list\">\n<li><strong>$30,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$60,000 bodily injury liability coverage per accident<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$15,000 property damage liability coverage<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is recommended that riders carry more than the minimum motorcycle insurance coverage, as motorcycle-related injuries tend to be more serious than those in motor vehicles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Motorcycle Riders FAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are some common questions about riding motorcycles we get at our law firm:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How old do I have to be to ride a motorcycle in California?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ride a motorcycle in California, you must be at least 15 and a half and obtain a learner\u2019s permit. You cannot get your motorcycle license until you are 16. Consult the California Motorcycle Handbook for more detailed information regarding motorcycle laws and safety regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can I drive a motorcycle without a motorcycle license?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot legally drive a motorcycle without the appropriate license. California Vehicle Code Section 12500 requires those operating a motorcycle or any motor-driven or motorized cycle to have a valid California motorcycle license.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What safety gear do I need?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to a helmet, protective gear such as gloves, over-the-ankle boots, durable jackets, and long pants provides additional protection against injuries in the event of a motorcycle accident. Appropriate safety gear also protects riders from road rash, burns, and other forms of trauma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, consider wearing high-visibility clothing to enhance visibility to other motorists, reducing the risk of a motorcycle accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What safety tips should I follow?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motorcycles are much less visible on the road than vehicles, making them more at risk for accidents. However, that doesn\u2019t mean motorcycle riding is unsafe. By following these safety tips, you can keep yourself and others safe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-arrow-list\">\n<li>Follow all traffic laws and always obey the speed limit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid distractions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear high-visibility protective gear and DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signal when turning or changing lanes. It\u2019s the law.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factors That Contribute to Motorcycle Accidents and Fatalities&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>In 2022,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov\/safety-topics\/motorcycle-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;6,218 motorcyclists<\/a>&nbsp;were killed in motor vehicle crashes&nbsp;in&nbsp;2022, representing 15% of all traffic fatalities. The fatality rate for motorcyclists is 22 times higher than for passenger vehicle occupants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three biggest factors contributing to fatal motorcycle crashes were:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-arrow-list\">\n<li><strong>Speeding<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alcohol impairment<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Helmet use&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of all motorcycle accidents reported in 2022, 35% of motorcyclists were speeding, and 42% were alcohol-impaired in single-vehicle crashes.
