So, if you are a student from the United Kingdom, your permit must be issued in your home country.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An IDP is essentially a translation of your national driving license. It ensures that you, as the driver, are an authorized driver.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who does not have an IDP or wishes to remain permanently in the U.S. must have a valid driver&#8217;s license, regardless of citizenship status.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get a valid California driver&#8217;s license or <a href=\"\/the-fine-print\/what-is-a-california-real-id-and-why-do-i-need-one\/\">Real ID<\/a>, you will need to visit a California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and bring your passport, visa, and proof of residency, like a utility bill. Once you have provided the required documents, you will need to take the following steps:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-arrow-list\">\n<li><strong>Fill out an Application<\/strong>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You must first complete the Driver&#8217;s License or Identification Card Application (DL 44).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pass a written test<\/strong>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Take the written knowledge test, which covers California traffic laws and road signs.
