Much like adding a credit card to a mobile wallet, users can now store their identification in a more convenient and safe manner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Wallet app, you can easily add your driver\u2019s license or state ID, giving you instant access with a simple tap. This modern solution is designed to streamline day-to-day activities, whether passing through TSA checkpoints at airports like San Francisco International (SFO) and Los Angeles International (LAX) or verifying your age at select businesses, including Circle K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the digital driver\u2019s license is in a pilot phase, open to 1.5 million Californians. Participants can also use it with a TruAge QR code to simplify age-restricted purchases, making transactions faster and safer.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do I Add My mDL to My Google or Apple Wallet?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dklaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/apple-wallet.jpg\" alt=\"Apple wallet\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To add your California mobile driver\u2019s license (mDL) to either your Google or Apple Wallet, follow these steps:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For Apple Wallet:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list is-style-arrow-list\">\n<li><strong>Open Apple Wallet<\/strong>&nbsp;on your iPhone or Apple Watch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tap the Add (+) button<\/strong>&nbsp;at the top of the screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>\u201cDriver\u2019s License or State ID\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose&nbsp;<strong>\u201cCalifornia mDL Pilot.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the prompts to&nbsp;<strong>scan the front and back<\/strong>&nbsp;of your driver\u2019s license.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the&nbsp;<strong>identity verification process<\/strong>, including taking a selfie and additional verification steps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For Google Wallet:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list is-style-arrow-list\">\n<li>Open the&nbsp;<strong>Google Wallet app<\/strong>&nbsp;on your Android device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap the&nbsp;<strong>\u201cAdd to Wallet\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>\u201cID card\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;and then choose&nbsp;<strong>\u201cDriver\u2019s License\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the instructions to scan your license and verify your identity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure you have the latest version of the app, as the mDL is still part of a pilot program in California.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I Still Need to Carry My Physical Driver\u2019s License?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You must still carry your physical driver\u2019s license while operating a motor vehicle in California. Even though mobile driver\u2019s licenses (mDL) are becoming available in digital wallets, it is currently illegal to present anything other than a physical driver\u2019s license to law enforcement if pulled over. Failing to carry your physical license can result in fines or other penalties, as outlined by California Vehicle Code Section 12951 VC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Law enforcement, state government agencies, and most businesses are not yet accepting the mDL. You must keep your physical license while driving until laws change to recognize digital licenses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"dklaw-toc__block align wp-block-dklaw-toc-block\"><div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is This Program Permanent?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>California\u2019s mobile driver\u2019s license (mDL) program is not yet permanent. It is currently part of a pilot program, which will run until June 30, 2026.
