With roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/longbeachcitycalifornia\">460,000 residents<\/a>, it&#8217;s the seventh-largest city in California, dense enough to have real neighborhoods, small enough that those neighborhoods actually feel like something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The demographic makeup is genuinely diverse. It&#8217;s also a place where your specific block matters as much as your neighborhood. The same city that has genuinely bikeable corridors and walkable beachfront also has arterial roads among the most dangerous in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Long Beach is probably not for you<\/strong> <strong>if<\/strong> you want a quiet, predictable suburb with minimal friction, or if you&#8217;re highly sensitive to traffic risk as a pedestrian or cyclist. That ranking has gotten worse, not better, since the city adopted its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/goactivelb\/programs\/safe-streets-lb\/what-is-vision-zero\/\">Vision Zero plan<\/a> in July 2020 with a stated goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, the city recorded 53 fatal traffic collisions \u2014 the most in over a decade, <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/brief\/transportation\/long-beach-vowed-to-eliminate-deadly-crashes-instead-theyre-the-highest-in-over-a-decade\">according to reporting by the Long Beach Post and LAist<\/a>. Thirty-two of those deaths were people walking, biking, or riding e-scooters. That&#8217;s more than the city&#8217;s 29 murders that year. Traffic fatality is the larger public safety story in Long Beach, not crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/goactivelb\/programs\/safe-streets-lb\/safe-streets-data\/\">Safe Streets data<\/a> states that pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists account for only 14% of collisions but 65% of traffic deaths and serious injuries. Speed is the most common contributing factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The most dangerous corridors<\/strong> (from the city&#8217;s High Injury Network, based on crash data):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-arrow-list\">\n<li><strong>Anaheim Street from Hayes Ave to Ximeno Ave:<\/strong> 300 pedestrian\/bike crashes recorded in the study period, 24 killed or seriously injured<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pacific Coast Highway from Pacific Ave to Temple Ave:<\/strong> 150 ped\/bike crashes, 18 killed or seriously injured<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Long Beach Blvd from Randolph Pl to 69th Way:<\/strong> 99 ped\/bike crashes, 14 killed or seriously injured<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific high-injury intersections include Anaheim &amp; Atlantic Ave, PCH &amp; Pacific Ave, and Atlantic &amp; Market Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city has plans to install <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/brief\/news\/speed-cameras-to-start-issuing-tickets-in-long-beach-by-fall-2026\">speed cameras at 18 locations<\/a>, with installation expected in summer 2026. Citations will start with warnings before progressing to fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On crime:<\/strong> According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/police\/\">LBPD&#8217;s year-end report<\/a>, overall reported offenses increased 4.8% citywide in 2024 compared to 2023. Homicides rose from 26 to 38, a 46% year-over-year increase. Despite this uptick, citywide violent crime remains significantly below historical peaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homicides in North Division rose from 6 to 12 in 2024, a number that is hard to ignore and has understandably shaped how people talk about North Long Beach. But it is worth looking at the full picture: total crime in the North Division actually dropped 2.4% that same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DK Law regularly handles <a href=\"https:\/\/dklaw.com\/practice-areas\/car-accidents\/\">car accidents<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dklaw.com\/practice-areas\/pedestrian-accidents\/\">pedestrian injuries<\/a>, and hit-and-run cases across Long Beach.
