Following Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, National Traffic Awareness Month, observed each August, is a critical time to highlight the importance of road safety for everyone — drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.9 million people die per year in traffic crashes.

Whether it’s staying alert to changing traffic patterns, avoiding distractions while driving, or understanding pedestrian right-of-way, National Traffic Awareness Month serves as a vital reminder that safety on the road is a shared responsibility. Distracted Driving: A Deadly Habit

One key pillar of National Traffic Awareness Month is avoiding distractions. Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of traffic accidents in California, leading to numerous injuries and fatalities each year. It’s crucial to stay focused on the road and avoid activities like texting, eating, or using in-car technologies while driving.

Texting and Driving Law in California

California has strict laws against texting and driving. Under California Vehicle Code 23123,  it is illegal to talk, text, or hold a handheld device while driving. Drivers over the age of 18 may use a hands-free device while driving, but those under 18 may not.

The fine for a first-time citation is a minimum of $162, and the fine increases with each subsequent citation. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), using a cell phone while driving increases the chance of being involved in a collision by 400%.

Distractions don’t just apply to drivers. Bicyclists and pedestrians must also avoid using their cell phones or engaging in any other distracting activity. If you are a parent to a child or teen, remind them of the importance of staying alert on the road and putting their phones away while walking or bicycling.

    Sharing the Road

Traffic Awareness Month is a great time to remember to share the road with bicyclists and pedestrians. Sharing the road means giving the right-of-way to pedestrians at crosswalks and leaving enough space when passing bicyclists on the road. Many serious and fatal traffic accidents can be avoided when road users respect the rules of the road rather than take advantage of them.

    Drivers

Drivers should always be vigilant and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists. This includes yielding the right-of-way, especially at crosswalks and bike lanes. Avoiding dangerous maneuvers, such as illegal left turns and running red lights, helps keep vulnerable road users safe.

    Bicyclists

In California, bicyclists are treated the same as motor vehicles. They must follow most of the same traffic rules, such as stopping at stop signs and red lights. Bicyclists are encouraged to use designated bike lanes where available and wear appropriate safety gear like helmets. It’s also important to use hand signals when turning or changing lanes to communicate intentions to drivers.

    Pedestrians

Pedestrians must be aware of their surroundings, use crosswalks, and avoid crossing roads unexpectedly. Wearing bright or reflective clothing at night can improve visibility.

    Back-to-School Safety Tips

    Back to school safety

As August marks the return to school for many children in California, it’s essential to observe back-to-school safety practices:

    Be Aware of Children Crossing

Children and young adults may dart across streets or between cars. As a driver, practice safe driving. Always check your surroundings, especially near schools and residential areas.

    Obey the Speed Limit

California school zones have 25 mph speed limits during school hours. Adhering to this limit helps protect children who walk or bike to school.

    Stop for Buses

Back to school means you’ll see many familiar yellow school buses on the road. If you see a bus with flashing lights, you need to slow down and stop.

    Obey Crossing Guards

Crossing guards ensure the safety of children and parents crossing the street near a school. Always follow their signals and directions.

Speak to a California Traffic Accident Lawyer

It is of utmost importance to practice traffic safety rules all year long, not just in August. If you or a loved one has been involved in a traffic accident, consulting with a traffic accident lawyer can help you understand your rights and options. DK Law offers free consultations to discuss your case and provide guidance on the best course of action.

If you were injured as a pedestrian, it is important to speak with a pedestrian accident lawyer as soon as possible. Pedestrian injuries can be life-altering, and obtaining compensation can be an uphill battle. Do not delay, as waiting can hurt your chances of filing a pedestrian accident claim against the negligent driver.
